This is a sample 3 Day/2 Night itinerary for Fraser Island. The itinerary is an example of what you can do with the time you have on the island!
I look back on my time at Fraser Island very fondly. For me, it was full of laughter and human connection. The disconnection from the outside world was extremely refreshing. Being close to the natural elements such as "showering" in the ocean rock pools and fresh water lakes was amazing! It's not for everyone, but I enjoyed every minute of feeling connected to the Earth in a way I don't get to do on a daily basis.
Please keep in mind that your experience may change depending on what you would like to see or where you would like to spend your time. It may also depend on what campsites you receive permits for and the times of the ocean tides. I hope this gives you some ideas about how to structure your time on the island!
4:00am – 8:00am: Drive to Hervey Bay (from Brisbane)
8:00am: Pick up rental car from Fraser Dingo 4wd Drive Hire and go through safety briefing
10:00am: Ferry over to Fraser Island
Drive through center of Fraser Island (bathroom stop at Central Station)
Pit stop at Eurong for snacks & to change into bathing suits
Start the drive on 75 mile beach!
Cross Eli Lake and take a moment to enjoy the water & short walk
Stop at Maheno Shipwreck
4pm: Arrive at Dundubara campsite to set up tents
This is when high tide started for us
We stayed at Dubdubara campsite which was half way up the beach and gave us good access for the next day.
5pm: Enjoy the evening, sunset & dinner under the beautiful night sky!
Read about food options & food packing list here.
6:00am: Wake up to watch the sunrise (it was quite stunning for us!)
7:00am: Start breakfast
8:00am: Pack everything up and head to the road, there’s a lot to enjoy today!
9:00am: Drive to Indian Head
I recommend leaving the car on the beach side; don’t try to drive through the inland trail as many people get bogged.
Hike over the Indian Head trail – either head to see the view from Indian Head or continue the beach on the other side towards The Champagne Pools (30 min walk).
10:00am – 1:00pm: Enjoy swimming and tanning at The Champagne Pools
Bring snacks & lunch so you can enjoy it with a view!
Plenty of space to set up towels and have a swim in the rock pools with no worries of ocean creatures
1:00pm – 3:00pm: Head back towards the second camp site near Eurong
It’ll take some time to drive back down to the next campsite
Stop at Wungul Sandblow and walk through the sand dunes, they’re stunning!
4:00pm: set up camp at Cromwell campsite
Watch the sunset, eat dinner and enjoy each other’s company!
6:00am: Watch the sunrise
7:00am: One last breakfast to enjoy in the outdoors!
8:00am: Pack up and head to Lake Mackenzie (you can also do Lake Wabby on this day)
9:00am – 3:00pm: Spend the day swimming and relaxing at Lake Mackenzie
4:00pm: Head back toward the Ferry and ferry back to Hervey Bay
